Madison Beekman is a second year student at Ohio University studying Child and Family Studies. From Peebles, Ohio. She is completing a internship at Athens CASA during the 2022 Spring Semester
What brought you to work for CASA?
I am currently a student at Ohio University and I’m majoring in Child and Family Studies. This semester I am in a 75-hour practicum where I am required to find a placement for an internship. I chose to do my internship with CASA/GAL because I find the work very inspiring and it will give me the experience I need to become a better advocate for children and their families.
Why is CASA important?
It gives children the opportunity to be seen and heard in situations that may not be the easiest for them. It brings help to those in need.
What do you do outside of CASA?
Outside of CASA, I like to stay active. I am on the women's club basketball team here at Ohio University. I love hanging out with my friends and going shopping.
How do wind down? Any self-care tips?
I love to listen to music and go on long car rides to clear my head. I also like to just take breaks and watch my favorite shows on Netflix.
What is something you have learned recently?
Starting a new journey is not always easy, it takes time to get the hang of things and it’s okay to feel lost and confused at times. Don’t fear asking questions. Starting this internship I have learned that there is no such thing as a dumb question.
What is one thing people may not know about you?
I want to be a Child Life Specialist. I am currently working on making this my future career. A child life specialist is a healthcare navigator to help children and families get through traumas, injuries, disabilities, etc..
